Build a one-page site with clear sections

A one-page site works when every section answers a visitor question in order. This guide walks through three decisions that turn a blank page into a clear, usable small-business page.

Step one: choose the single goal — MakeAPageMakeAPage · Commerce

01

Step one: choose the single goal

Before writing, decide what one action the visitor should take: call, book, buy or sign up. Worked example: a neighborhood bike repair shop picks booking a tune-up as the goal. Every section then supports that choice, and anything unrelated, like a long company history, moves to a short line or disappears. Write the goal as a sentence at the top of your notes and check each block against it. If a section does not help someone take that action or trust the shop enough to try, cut it or shorten it.

Step two: order sections by visitor questions — MakeAPageYour baselineThe alternative

Step two: order sections by visitor questions

Arrange sections in the order a stranger would ask questions. For the bike shop: what do you do, how much does it cost, where are you, why should I trust you, how do I book. That becomes a headline with a short description, a simple price list, an address with hours, two customer-style reassurance points such as years of experience, and a booking button. Keep each section to a heading and a few lines. Place the main button near the top and repeat it at the bottom so a visitor who scrolls never has to hunt for it.

Step three: review on a phone and refine — MakeAPageYour baselineThe alternative

03

Step three: review on a phone and refine

Most first visits happen on a phone, so check the page there before sharing it. For the bike shop, confirm the headline is readable without zooming, the phone number can be tapped, the price list fits the screen and the booking button is easy to press with a thumb. Then ask one person unfamiliar with the shop to find the tune-up price and the opening hours while you watch. Where they hesitate, rewrite the heading or move the section. Repeat after a week, adjusting wording based on the questions customers actually ask.
